For our fourth installment of this blog series, we’re sharing what our Australian team is reading in these difficult times. Read on for reading inspiration as well as some NoveList search strategies!

  1. Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton
This is an Australian author, and the story is set in Brisbane. It’s excellent. This book is about love, crime, fate, magic, and coming of age through the eyes of the protagonist, Eli. It is fast-paced and an easy and enjoyable read.

  2. Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid
Very relevant to the times we live in today as it creates awareness about the stereotypes around race and class. It’s on Reese Witherspoon’s book club reads!
Search MM book club to see other celebrity book club picks, or MM  "Your favorite book club name here"
  3. Blindness by Jose Saramago
This book partly won the author the Nobel Prize for literature. It deals with a pandemic of white blindness and how people are affected, and the government react and deal with this. It also highlights human nature and how people respond to their environments.
Looking for more pandemic stories? Search SU Epidemics
  4. Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
This is the story of the complicated relationship between two women belonging to different classes, races, and backgrounds and how that plays a role in their journeys as a mother. This title is mostly character-driven and focuses on a small town called Shaker Heights. The book explores race, image, identity, family, as well as difficult topics like adoption and abortion.

  5. Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
This one has been highly recommended by every book lover I’ve met. I think I’m just late to the party with this one.
Take a break with this leisurely paced and atmospheric book!
  6. We Were the Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter
This is a hard-breaking novel based on the true story of the trials and tribulations of a Jewish family during World War II.
Search NoveList by time period. For example DE "Second World War era (1939-1945)"
  7. The Lost Man by Jane Harper
After her first two spectacular books, I can’t wait to finish The Lost Man. Hopefully, I will finish it in time for her 4th book that will be out soon.
You can search NoveList by location. For example, search SD "Queensland"
  8. Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari
This book details the evolution of humans and how many of our behaviours and cultures have been impacted by our ancestors.
