Background
Jamie Oliver was born on May 27, 1975, in Essex, England. His parents, Trevor and Sally, owned a pub called the Cricketers. From a young age, Oliver helped cook at the pub, and he developed an interest in food there. Oliver was interested in simple food that almost anyone could make. Although Oliver found a haven in the kitchen, he found school difficult, in part because of a learning disability. When he was just sixteen years old, he left school to complete a program at the Westminster Catering College, known currently as Westminster Kingsway College, in London.

Life’s Work
After completing school, Oliver worked in a number of restaurants. He continued to hone his cooking skills and develop his own personal style. He worked for a time in France, which influenced his cooking style. He also had the opportunity to work in some great British restaurants, including Antonio Carluccio’s Neal Street Restaurant in London. Then he began working at the River Café, which was well known for its high-quality food.
In 1997, officials from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) noticed Oliver when he made an appearance in a documentary about the River Café. The executives liked Oliver and his unique style. They offered him a cooking show on the public broadcasting channel.
Oliver first started his career in media on the BBC show The Naked Chef, which premiered in Britain in 1997. His personality and cooking style made his show popular. The show first aired in the United States in 1999. Oliver wrote a cookbook to accompany the series, and it became a best seller. He published two additional Naked Chef cookbooks, which were also very popular. His television show and cookbooks were very successful in Britain, the United States, and elsewhere. Oliver continued to star in television cooking shows in Britain and the United States. He also continued to write popular cookbooks.
As Oliver became better known, he worked as a spokesperson. He endorsed the British supermarket chain Sainsbury’s, and he advised the company about how to improve the quality of its stores. Oliver also created a line of cookware with T-fal, and he appeared in the company’s advertisements.
As Oliver became more successful, he also became committed to helping his community. He used his celebrity to create programs that teach people about cooking and eating healthy, fresh foods. In 2002, Oliver created the Fifteen Apprentice Programme. This program trains young adults to become chefs. Many of the students who complete the program get jobs in the food service industry, including at Oliver’s Fifteen restaurant in London.
Oliver began discussing the problems he saw with school lunches in the United Kingdom. He pointed out that the youngest children in society were being fed low-quality food, what many would consider junk food. His work in this area helped make changes, and the British government took action to make school lunches healthier and more nutritious.
Oliver also created the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation. The foundation’s goal was to teach people about cooking and eating simple, healthy food. The foundation does work in the United Kingdom, United States, and elsewhere. The foundation is committed to teaching people and working with governments to improve the quality of food that people eat. The foundation included a number of programs. The Kitchen Garden Project taught elementary school students about growing, cooking, and eating simple, fresh foods. The foundation’s Ministry of Food taught cooking techniques to people of all ages so they can prepare homemade food with fresh, healthy ingredients.
In 2008, Oliver launched a chain of Italian restaurants across the United Kingdom. Named Jamie's Italian, the chain had forty-two physical locations in the United Kingdom and twenty-four in other parts of the world at its peak. However, in 2019, Oliver and the chain filed for bankruptcy protection after falling $103 million into debt. In 2023, Oliver decided to try the restaurant business again, announcing a new chain venture. His first restaurant in the planned chain, Jamie Oliver Catherine Street, opened in late 2023.
