Brief History
Prior to PlayStation, Nintendo’s console was the chief console in the gaming world. The console, popularly referred to as Nintendo, was manufactured and produced by Nintendo. Sony's launching of PlayStation placed a competitive spirit between the brands.
The first PlayStation was developed and launched in Japan in 1994. A number of events led to the appearance of PlayStation at this date. Ken Kutaragi, known as the "father of PlayStation" (playstationmuseum.com), was fascinated by System G, a work station designed by Sony to produce high level 3-D (three-dimensional) graphics. Kutaragi approached Sony with the view to changing the face of console gaming by elevating the design and sound quality of video-gaming consoles. Sony was at first hesitant to enter the market, perceiving these to be toys rather than high-level electronics for which the company was renowned. An attempt at negotiating an interactive arrangement between Nintendo and Sony did not manifest in a partnership deal. Instead, the president of Sony, Norio Ohga, finally told Kutaragi to go ahead with his vision. PS-X was the code name given for PlayStation X during its design phase. The explosion of PlayStation when it hit the market set about a major change in the world of game playing. Increased competition among Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft resulted in further pursuits of technological advancements.
The original 1994 PlayStation console remained popular with additional games being added to it until 2006. This console utilized CDs rather than cartridges, making it unique at the time of production. 3-D gaming became a featured activity with the optical disc format and storage possibilities presenting new opportunities for play. In addition to its console function, the fact that PlayStation 1 functioned as video CD as well as audio CD playback, meant that the way was paved for all-inclusive home entertainment systems. The DualShock control was part of the original design and is still a basic foundation of all console systems introduced over the years. From PlayStation's beginnings in 1994, new improved consoles continue to be launched.
Overview
Models
PlayStation 2 (PS2) became the successor to PS1 in 2000. The DVD format was included in this model as well as extended accessories. The model remains popular with 155 million units recorded as having been sold worldwide by 2012. PSone, a more compact console version, offered a more aesthetically pleasing graphic interface. Furthermore, to appeal to customers who wished to plug their PlayStation into a car, this model featured a small LCD screen. In 2003, the PSX console added a DVR recorder. Revolutionary in its capabilities, including editing capacity, the PSX was priced accordingly, and its expense prohibited home usage. By 2004, a streamlined slim PS2 Slimline arrived, similar to PS2 but smaller and quieter. PlayStation Portable (PSP) was released in the same year as a versatile style of hand-held consoles. Exciting games, enhanced colors, a high-tech screen, together with the first integrated web-browser software were features of PSP. Along came PlayStation 3 in 2006, with a new feature of interaction via the PlayStation Network (PSN) and wireless functionality. Slim and Super Slim appeared as smaller, lighter, and redesigned PS3 variations. PSN, a free service, offered the motto of "always on, always connected" (ps4home.com). An advancement in the form of PlayStation Vita hit the gaming market by the end of 2011 into 2012. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity became prominent features in addition to a high level of versatility with regard to Internet and multimedia interface.
PlayStation PS4 was launched in November 2013. Within ten months, it had sold 10 million units worldwide. The console is custom made with a gray blue color. The wireless controller is DualShock 4. The bundle includes Uncharted 4: A Thief's End TM. The company markets it as a discovery adventure for treasure hunters seeking to travel to exotic areas (playstation.com). Popularity and success of the PlayStation PS4 console may be attributed to its launch and distribution, price, or games, yet for Sony the whopping success was beyond its imagination.

PlayStation PS5 was launched in November 2020. By February 2022, Sony had sold 17.3 million units. The new system features advanced graphics, faster loading times, and an enhanced immersive experience. The PS5 includes 3D audio to create an immersive soundscape.
