In the 2020s, the family-owned company and its subsidiaries had over 120,000 employees in around sixty countries worldwide. It had an annual income of around $125 billion. It was also known for the conservative political activities of the brothers who co-own it.

History

Koch Industries was founded in 1940 by American chemical engineer Fred C. Koch. After attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Koch returned to the ranching and refining businesses in his home state of Texas. He developed a new, more efficient way to produce gasoline from heavy crude oil and established Wood River Oil and Refining Company to market this new process and its product. When accusations were made that he had violated industry patents, Koch established oil refineries in Russia. His experience with the Communist country would have a lasting impact on his politics and those of his offspring that would last into the twenty-first century.

Koch had four sons, Frederick, Charles, and twins David and Bill, who also became part of the family business. Charles and his younger brothers also pursued degrees in engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. When Fred Koch died in 1967, Charles took over. He renamed the company Koch Industries in his father’s honor. An internal financial battle between the brothers over the company was settled in the 1980s and resulted in David and Charles buying out the shares held by their brothers. After the buyout, David and Charles assumed control of the company.

From its origins in the engineering and petroleum industries, the company diversified and expanded to include a huge range of industries and products. This originated in the company’s part-interest in a Minnesota refinery. Another operation, Union Oil, also owned part-interest in the refinery, known as Pine Bend. Koch Industries purchased Union Oil’s shares before the end of the 1960s. This brought a new range of products into the company, including the production of asphalt; petroleum coke, a fuel frequently used to generate energy for manufacturing; sulfur and other chemicals; and other products such as fibers and polymers.

The company continued to diversify by acquiring companies and new types of businesses. These included Invista, acquired in 2004; Georgia Pacific, acquired in 2005; Molex, acquired in 2013; and Guardian Industries, acquired in 2017. The company also owns a number of other subsidiary companies acquired in other ways, including Flint Hills Resources, Koch Ag & Energy Solutions, and Koch Pipeline, among others.

Invista was part of DuPont and manufactures a variety of synthetic fibers and substances. These include resins; polymers; spandex; and other chemicals used in a number of brands the company has trademarked, including Tactel, Stainmaster, and Lycra. This subsidiary has locations in around twenty countries and is also involved in technology licensing.

Georgia-Pacific manufactures paper products including paper cups, napkins and towels, toilet paper, and building products such as wallboard. Koch Industries purchased Georgia-Pacific for $21 million. This acquisition helped Koch Industries grow to become one of the largest privately held companies in the United States.

Molex Industries specializes in electronics for special purposes. It has an eighty-year history of technological innovations. The fiber optics and other electronic components it creates are used in everything from smartphones to televisions to equipment used by the space program.

Guardian Industries specializes in research, development, and manufacture of glass and glass products. This includes specialty products such as car windows, specially coated glass for architectural applications, and products designed to meet special insulation needs. The company became part of Koch Industries in February 2017.

Flint Hills Resources became a stand-alone subsidiary of Koch Industries in 2002. It originated from some of the company’s holdings in the petroleum industry. It has an international presence in markets related to asphalt, various chemicals, automotive parts, and biofuels.

Koch Ag & Energy Solutions oversees the operations of three subsidiaries related to energy services, methanol production, and fertilizer. Koch Pipeline owns and operates oil and refined petroleum pipelines in six states, several of which are part of Flint Hills Resources operations. In addition, Koch Industries owns three ranches and thousands of cattle through Matador Cattle Company, along with several smaller subsidiaries dedicated to chemicals, minerals, and other products.

In March 2023, the company announced Dave Robertson would become a co-chief executive with Charles Koch, along with several other major leadership changes. In 2024, Koch acquired one of the largest nitrogen fertilizer plants in the world, OCI Global's Iowa, and Koch Disruptive Technologies invested in artificial intelligence technology, such as Rivos and Celestial.AI. Conversely, TransTech Group acquired Koch Heat Transfer’s North American company.

Impact

Koch Industries and its billionaire owners are a significant part of key industries that play an important role in the American economy. The company is consistently ranked as one of the largest privately held companies in America and has a significant presence in the world economy and business world as well. This standing is protected by the level of diversity the company has achieved, which limits its risk from market fluctuations in any one industry.

In addition, the company is often associated with the conservative political views of its owners, and their activism on behalf of conservative issues. Fred Koch’s early experience with Communism when the company held Russian oil refineries continues to influence the family’s politics. The Koch brothers, still associated with the company, are known for their Libertarian viewpoints and their support of conservative causes and political positions.

Koch Industries has also been subject to some criticism for its approach to the environment. There have been allegations that some of its manufacturing plants contribute to pollution or otherwise harm the environment. Some environmental watchdog agencies have also claimed that the Kochs themselves help fund groups and research studies that support climate change skepticism.
