Guillermo “Mito” Nervo (gee-YEHR-moh MEE-toh NEHR-voh), the narrator, the son of Claudia Nervo, a famous Mexican film star. He is a lanky young man with black eyes, olive skin, and blond hair whose descent into madness is centered on his obsession with his mother and his incestuous desire for her. Kidnapped by Claudia while living with his father and grandmother, he spent his adolescence in boarding schools. Although loved by his mother, he is alternately pushed away from and pulled toward her, based on her whims. While attending a boarding school in Switzerland, he meets Giancarlo, a young man he greatly admires and who tries to seduce him. Guillermo, or “Mito,” a diminutive used by Claudia, is a parasite whose physical, mental, and financial existence is dependent on his mother. Guillermo takes Bela as a lover to make Claudia jealous and as a substitute to satisfy his sexual desire for his mother. When Claudia takes Giancarlo as her lover, Guillermo's sanity completely unravels. He enters a sanatorium in Rome. After being released, he returns to Mexico. At the end, Guillermo has been transformed into an abused dog and watches his servants destroy his apartment, one of his “holy places,” while fantasizing about tearing Claudia and Giancarlo apart.

Claudia Nervo, a famous Mexican actress and mother of Guillermo. A beautiful and sensual women, she exhibits a keen business sense and a penchant for order and organization. She sees herself as the national idol of the time and likens her role in Mexico to that of Pancho Villa. She keeps Mito on edge, first showering him with attention and presents and then, by stopping payment on his monthly check, forcing him to beg her forgiveness for a slight. She clings to the glamour of her public life and uses her young lover Giancarlo to reaffirm the power of her beauty and fame. Her preoccupation with her career and her entourage leaves her blind to her son's disintegration. Guillermo's obsession with her both irritates and stimulates her.

Giancarlo D'Aquila (gee-ahn-KAHR-loh dah-KEE-lah), a film actor, Claudia's costar and lover. A contemporary of Guillermo, he is young, daring, narcissistic, and carelessly elegant in dress. Guillermo admits that Giancarlo is the masculine counterpart of Claudia. As a young man in Switzerland, Giancarlo attempted to seduce Guillermo. Later, when he becomes Claudia's lover, his youth and his relationship with Claudia and Guillermo are the final blows sending Guillermo into madness.

Bela (BEH-lah), Guillermo's seductive Italian girlfriend and one of Claudia's satellites. When Guillermo meets her, she is made up to look like a diminutive and lesser version of Claudia. Although she becomes Guillermo's lover, their relationship never goes beyond a tentative physical union. Even that is frustrated by Guillermo's obsession with Claudia.

Gudelia (gew-DEH-lee-ah), Guillermo's cook and maid. In the final chapter, assisted by her lover, she destroys Guillermo's apartment as he looks on as a dog.

Jesus (heh-SEWS), Gudelia's lover. He is a strong, handsome man admired by Guillermo for his strength. After Guillermo is transformed into a dog, Jesus beats and kicks him.
