Captain Cyrus Harding, an engineer in General Grant's army, Nebuchadnezzar (Neb), Captain Cyrus Harding's black servant, Gideon Spilett, a reporter, Jack Pencroft, a sailor, and Herbert Brown, the orphan son of one of Jack Pencroft's former captains, passengers in a balloon in which they make their escape from the capital of the Confederacy. Caught in a storm, they are blown far out to sea and deposited on an uncharted island. Taking stock of their resources, the refugees set about to establish a colony, which they call Lincoln Island. With the knowledge brought with them, and with ingenuity and hard work, they triumph over their surroundings. Through their labors they are aided, in times of need, by a mysterious presence who finally reveals himself as Captain Nemo of the submarine Nautilus. He warns them to leave the island before its volcano explodes. With the treasure he bequeathes them, they buy land in America and colonize again.

Captain Nemo, captain of the submarine Nautilus. Living alone on Lincoln Island, he gives aid in secret to its refugees. He finally reveals his identity, requests that he be buried in the Nautilus, and bequeathes his treasure to the colonists.

Ayrton, a mutineer. Put ashore by his captain, he is rescued by the colonists of Lincoln Island. Repenting of his past life, he becomes one of their company and shares their adventures and fortunes.
