Ever wonder what library users worldwide are searching for in catalogs just like yours? At NoveList, we've got the data.

It’s no surprise that David Grann’s Killers of the Flower Moon has cracked the list, with the film adaptation coming out soon. What is surprising is the absence of Colleen Hoover on this list for the first time in years.

Here are September's top ten titles searched in library catalogs that include NoveList Select:

  1. Tom Lake by Ann Patchett

  1. Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

  1. Holly by Stephen King

  1. Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

  1. None of This Is True by Lisa Jewell

  1. The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride

  1. Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver

  1. The River We Remember by William Kent Krueger

  1. The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese

  1. Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann

This month, we crunched the numbers to see how all the NoveList Select enrichment we provide in customer catalogs shakes down by genre. What we found was fascinating! While we expected to see a few heavy hitters in the data (for example, we expected top billing for titles in genres like mystery, fantasy, and thriller), we were surprised to find “picture books” in the number one position.

As a librarian and father of a young child, I’ll admit I take a fairly passive approach to book selection. My daughter has free rein in the children’s section, and we tend to take the “random shopping spree” approach to the shelves. She grabs whatever piques her interest, seemingly at random. We leave with a bag of books, often without ever touching the kiosk terminals to look something up.

Seeing how much traffic picture book records actually get in OPACs was not what I expected, and it’s a good lesson: Library users might approach the collection and website differently than you do, and that’s OK. It’s important to check in on the data if only to understand where there may be gaps in understanding the communities we serve.
