Digital magazines may not be traditional learning tools for students, however, many magazines are geared specifically towards learning in quick, easily digestible bites. Here are five reasons why digital magazines may be beneficial while remote learning:

1. A simple way to dive into reading

Educational or special interest magazines are a great way to help engage reluctant readers. Magazines offer short interesting stories and news articles that are informative and easy to digest which may help improve reading skills and confidence.

2. A tool for writing

Writing an entire paper or book report can feel daunting for some pupils but reading magazines can prompt creativity that traditional paper writing does not. With a magazine, teachers can assign students to write a poem about a photo in the publication or come up with a unique story based on the information found in an article of their choosing. This provides an outlet for imagination and improving writing skills.

3. Engaging non-fiction

Visuals found in magazines like sidebars, bolded text, word bubbles and more, help to pull young readers to interesting parts of the article and also encourage students to continue to read. The more engaged students are in an article, the more likely they are to finish the magazine.

4. Up-to-date content

While textbooks and workbooks feature classic tales that still resonate today, with magazines, readers can engage in current topics. Magazines are inexpensive ways to keep up with trends ranging from new advancements in science, to modern poetry styles, to world events.

5. Student socialization

Helping students feel connected to their classroom during remote learning can work to reduce stress and improve morale. Children can read the same magazines at home and discuss articles or charts they enjoyed during video chats. Since magazine articles are typically shorter, students may be able to discuss multiple topics during one session.
