Halfway between downtown Houston and the Galveston coast lies League City, Texas. Some 120,000 residents enjoy boating and outdoor water sports. Oak trees line the streets. You can tour a one-room schoolhouse built in the late 1800s and enjoy a picnic in the historic League Park. And the community loves to read... which is a challenge that Helen Hall Public Library director Meredith Layton is ready to face.

“We're a growing community, but our footprint isn't necessarily growing,” explains Meredith. “We are still one central location, and we've had the same library space since the 80s, despite the population growth."

The library’s work is award-winning. Just a few weeks ago, the Helen Hall Public Library received the 2024 Achievement of Library Excellence Award from the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association (TMLDA), an affiliate of the Texas Municipal League. One reason Helen Hall Public Library deserves this accolade is its focus on readers.

The library just finished the strategic planning process. One of the library’s main goals is to excel in customer service by connecting readers to books they want, when they want them.
