ピュー研究所では 2021年1月25日から2月8日にかけて、アメリカ人の読書習慣と利用したい（書籍の）フォーマットに関する調査を実施しました。データは、過去10年間で嗜好がどのように変化したか、あるいは変わらなかったかを表しています。
この調査から見えてきた重要なポイントのひとつに、現在3割にのぼるアメリカ人が電子書籍を読んでいること、そしてこの数値は 2019年の調査時の25％から増加していることが挙げられます。
この増加の背景には、電子書籍に対応した技術へのアクセスが増加したこと、COVID-19 の感染拡大時に、電子書籍の読書量が増加したことがあると考えられます。つまり、電子書籍の需要は、時の経過と共に移り変わりを続けますが、需要そのものは今後も存続するということです。
