IPSWICH, Mass. — April 6, 2015 — Colegio de Estudios Superiores de Administración (CESA), a top business school in Colombia, has launched EBSCO Discovery Service™ API (EDS API) with Koha, an open-source integrated library system created by librarians for librarians. The school is the first in Latin America to implement EDS API with Koha.
Koha open-source ILS has been growing in popularity in libraries worldwide. According to Celiar Quiroga F., Library Director at CESA, pairing EDS with Koha provides their users with the best search experience. “Integrating EDS API with Koha was the most natural choice for us. It gives us the best option for delivering an optimal search and retrieval experience for our users.” Quiroga also notes that it wouldn’t have been possible without the interoperability of information systems. “The integration was made possible by the teamwork of EDS and our KOHA local support provider, Metabiblioteca. They have both provided great support for our library.”
Quiroga says EDS API with Koha also aligns with the library’s goals to be at the forefront in providing innovative and quality resources. “Using EDS API with Koha will position our library to be among the best in the business schools in Colombia and Latin America.”
With EDS API with Koha, CESA is able to integrate critical components of EDS into their existing Koha solution. One of the EDS features that the library has come to rely on is the inclusion of subject indexes which combines rich metadata with subject indexing and abstracts from leading subject indexes that aren't available through any other discovery service. “The subject indexes have become a strategic partner for the user, allowing a controlled natural language to define their information needs and obtain better relevant results. The integration of information resources and knowledge disciplines maximize the value of our library resources.”
The EBSCO Discovery Service API enables libraries to use their own portals or website applications for a discovery user interface while making the most of their discovery solution by connecting researchers to the enhanced search features available from EBSCO Discovery Service. The EDS API offers easy integration, provides comprehensive documentation and support, and its straight-forward technology allows libraries to create a unique user interface experience.
EBSCO recently announced that they will provide support and funding to Koha for important enhancements. EBSCO and Koha will work together to provide a viable web-based, open source ILS for libraries of all types.
