DynaMed™ Adds 61 Recently Released Choosing Wisely Canada Recommendations

~ Recommendations from 12 Organizations are now Easily Accessible to Healthcare Providers at the Point-of-Care ~

IPSWICH, Mass.October 29, 2014Choosing Wisely Canada just released 61 recommendations that are now available in the evidence-based clinical support tool DynaMed from EBSCO Health. The new recommendations to avoid unnecessary tests and treatments are from 12 organizations and have been added to the Choosing Wisely Canada recommendations that previously existed in DynaMed.

With the recommendations included as a part of DynaMed, healthcare providers have access to valuable information at the point of care. All of these recommendations can be found in the “Choosing Wisely Canada” topic in DynaMed and DynaMed editors are working with the Canadian Medical Association and related organizations to integrate the recommendations across the relevant clinical topics in a way that maximizes their visibility in the flow of patient care where they are most needed.

Choosing Wisely Canada aims to help physicians and patients make smart and effective choices to ensure high-quality care by having conversations about unnecessary tests, treatments and procedures. The recommendations are the result of Canadian national specialty societies identifying tests, treatments, or procedures that are commonly used but not supported by evidence and/or could expose patients to unnecessary harm.

Choosing Wisely Canada is modeled after the Choosing Wisely campaign in the United States, an initiative of the ABIM Foundation. The Canadian campaign has been developed in partnership with the Canadian Medical Association and involves more than 30 specialty societies. The recommendations are not meant to be used to establish coverage decisions or exclusions but to spur conversations about what is appropriate and necessary treatment.

The 12 additional specialty societies that are providing the recommendations for Choosing Wisely Canada are:

  • Canadian Association of Gastroenterology
  • Canadian Association of Medical Oncologists
  • Canadian Association of Pathologists
  • Canadian Association of Radiation Oncology
  • Canadian Hematology Society
  • Canadian Society for Surgical Oncology
  • Canadian Society for Transfusion Medicine
  • Canadian Society  of Endocrinology and Metabolism
  • Canadian Society of Nephrology
  • Canadian Society of Palliative Care Physicians
  • Canadian Urological Association
  • Occupational Medicine Specialists of Canada
