EBSCO Information Services and the American Library Association Award Seven Scholarships for Librarians to Attend the 2018 ALA Annual Conference

~Annual Scholarship Enables Librarians to Expand Professional Development Opportunities at National Conference ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — May 10, 2018 — In partnership with the American Library Association (ALA), EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) has awarded seven librarians with $1,000 scholarships to attend the 2018 ALA Annual Conference. Scholarships aim to defray the cost of travel and other expenses, helping librarians to take advantage of the conference’s professional development and networking opportunities.

The scholarship winners include four first-time attendees from the U.S.:

  • Jessica Colbert, Resident Librarian, J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah
  • Michelle Farias, Special Collections Assistant, Redwood Library & Athenaeum, Providence, Rhode Island (first-time attendee)
  • Twanna Hodge, Reference and Research Services Librarian, SUNY Upstate Health Sciences Library, Syracuse, New York
  • Brenda Killen, Asst. Director of Library Services, University of Maine at Augusta - Bennett D. Katz Library, Augusta, Maine
  • Victoria Ogle, Senior Library Associate II, University of Tennessee Libraries, Knoxville, Tennessee (first-time attendee)
  • Everett Pine, Reference/Technology/Instruction Librarian, Wayne State University Library, Harrison Township, Michigan (first-time attendee)
  • Marian Royal, Library Services & Instructional Materials Manager, Seattle Public Schools, Seattle, Washington (first-time attendee)

As part of the application process, librarians were asked to write an essay explaining how attending the conference will contribute to their professional development. First-time conference attendee, Everett Pine of Wayne State University Library, discussed the importance of networking in the librarian profession. “Attending this conference would offer me an opportunity to network with like-minded professionals across the country, learn how other libraries are conducting outreach, websites, and instruction, and see how my goals for libraries can fit into the greater picture and future of libraries.”

EBSCO is dedicated to supporting the library community around the world and maintains a long tradition of co-sponsoring scholarships to ALA conferences that provide funds for conference registration, travel and expenses. The scholarship recipients will be honored by EBSCO and ALA representatives during the conference at a breakfast on Sunday, June 24.

Applications were judged by an ALA-designated jury consisting of chairman Dodie Ownes, Regina Carter, Joseph Eagan, Pamela Jo Renfrow, Sarah Sullivan and Andrea Lapsley.
