EBSCO Information Services’ Option Grid™ Releases Opioid Addiction Decision Aid

~ Shared Decision Making Tool Breaks Down Treatment Options for Healthcare Professionals and Their Patients ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — January 23, 2020 — EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO), the leading provider of evidence-based clinical resource tools, has announced the availability of a new decision aid within its shared decision making product, Option Grid. Opioid Addiction: Treatment Options presents several pharmacotherapeutic options to manage opioid addiction.

Opioid addiction is a chronic relapsing condition of continued opioid use despite problematic consequences for more than a year. According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are 192 drug overdose deaths every day and opioids are currently the main driver of these fatalities. The Opioid Addiction decision aid is intended to help facilitate conversations around medical treatment for those who are addicted to opioids and want to compare medical treatments. Treatment options include maintenance treatment with methadone, buprenorphine, or naltrexone, as well as opioid cessation with a methadone or buprenorphine taper.

Patient decision aids are tools to help achieve shared decision making by enabling patients to understand and compare their healthcare options in the context of their personal preferences and arrive at informed decisions. Option Grid decision aids are interactive and personalized, enabling a tailored presentation of healthcare options that are most relevant to the patient. EBSCO’s Option Grids are used by health systems, health plans and other patient-focused organizations to improve the quality and cost of care, as well as patient experience. They can be integrated into clinical EHR workflows as well as other digital platforms or accessed through the web by consumers directly.

Dr. Glyn Elwyn, BA MD MSc PhD, professor at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College and co-founder of Option Grid, says this new tool was developed in response to the increasing risks of opioid addiction. “More and more, clinicians are treating patients for opioid addiction; they require a tool to help patients determine the most appropriate path for treatment. This decision aid is intended to support and encourage these conversations between a patient and their clinician, helping to determine the best course of treatment for the individual.”
