Soka University of America Selects EBSCO Discovery Service™

~ Enhanced Relevancy Ranking, Customization and Excellent Support from EBSCO Prompts University to Switch Discovery Solutions ~

IPSWICH, Mass.September 29, 2014 — Daisaku & Kaneko Ikeda Library of Soka University of America (SUA) has recently chosen the EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) from EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) as its new custom discovery solution for the library’s databases. SUA chose EDS to enhance its community’s research experience and the library has found working with EBSCO representatives and engineers to be an excellent experience as well.

Library Director, Ms. Hiroko Tomono, said the staff at EBSCO provided first class support and made sure that Ikeda Library had direct access to the Discovery Service Engineers who were customizing EDS to its needs. “I want to thank the EBSCO representatives who went above and beyond to help us implement the EDS. We asked a lot of questions. Their explanations were thorough. We never felt rushed to make a purchasing decision while we were evaluating EDS.”

The Discovery Service Engineers, according to Ms.Tomono, were knowledgeable and swift to respond to queries and find solutions. “All of them kept us informed, and I felt comfortable working with every one of them, at every step of the way.”

Customizability was one of the features that attracted the library team to EDS. Reference and Instruction Librarian, Ms. Lisa Polfer, explained, “Our other discovery service was not open to much customization. We are taking advantage of the customization features in EDS such as changing the wording in tool bar tabs, linking to our LibGuides, and adding disciplines to enable for discipline limited searching.”

EDS also delivers a full-feature discovery experience to users and Ms. Polfer says the usibility of EDS was also a factor in their decision to switch. “With our [school’s] international focus, the ability to link to geography is especially important, but it is also important to be able to limit to source type, subjects, and location. I like to say the limiters and facets lets us drive instead of giving the wheel to an algorithm. We have also found the relevancy ranking in EDS to be quite good and even better when we pair it with subject terms.”

EBSCO Discovery Service creates a unified, customized index of an institution’s information resources, and provides an easy, yet powerful means of accessing all of that content from a single search box-searching made even more powerful because of the quality of metadata and depth and breadth of coverage.
