Taipei American School Adds EBSCO Discovery Service™ to Meet Students’ Technology Needs

~ EDS Provides Sophisticated Tool for Research ~

IPSWICH, Mass. September 14, 2015 — Taipei American School, a secondary school in Taiwan, has implemented EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) from EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) to improve the student experience and provide innovative access to and discovery of quality scholarly information. The addition of EDS to the library collection at Taipei American School aligns with their mission to be an innovative 21st century learning community.

Taipei American School had used a federated search product but curriculum changes meant that students were conducting more college-level research so the demands for academic content, indexes, and more sophisticated tools for analyzing bodies of knowledge grew. Students had also become more savvy in their use of all kinds of technologies, including database and internet searching. It was clear that in order to continue to meet the secondary school students’ information needs, the library needed to add a discovery layer to their research experience.

Dr. Candace Aiani, Librarian at Taipei American School says they considered a number of discovery products before deciding on EDS. “Our evaluation team chose EDS for a number of reasons. First, unlike other one-search-type school products that could not integrate highly with academic products, EDS is able to integrate with all of our resources. Second, we also found the EBSCO interface is easy to teach and use, and third, EBSCO had a proven record of quality service and products. We knew we could depend on good support from EBSCO. I believe students will use EDS extensively far into the future.”

Throughout the launch of EDS, EBSCO continued to impress the staff at the school. Aiani added “EBSCO Support worked with us to ensure that the results made sense, that the results were relevant and that they reflected a balanced variety of resources including local collections as well as international vendors and content. As a secondary school, our experience and technical support is more limited than what would normally be found at a university. Fortunately, EBSCO Support was superb, and the technical team worked with us patiently and extensively until we understood what we were doing and were satisfied with the results.”

EBSCO Discovery Service creates a unified, customized index of an institution’s information resources, and an easy, yet powerful means of accessing all of that content from a single search box-searching made even more powerful because of the quality of its relevance and value ranking technology.
