Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II in Italy Chooses EBSCO Discovery Service™

~ Comprehensive Collection of Metadata Key Factor in Decision to Implement EBSCO Discovery Service™~

IPSWICH, Mass. — June 12, 2012 —Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II in Italy has selected EBSCO Discovery Service(EDS) from EBSCO Publishingas its discovery tool. The library had been looking to increase the usage of electronic resources amoung researchers and students and they felt that EDS was the perfect fit by creating a unified index of their resources and providing a simplified but powerful search experience.

Roberto Delle Donne, Professor and Chair of CAB - Center for Libraries at Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II says they had looked at other discovery solutions but was particularly impressed with the breadth and depth of the EDS Base Index. “We felt that the metadata in EDS was simply bigger and stronger than other services that we evaluated. We are very pleased with the content in EDS and found that it always provides punctual and pertinent results even for bibliographic research.”

The EDS Base Index is comprised of metadata from the world’s foremost information providers. At present, the EDS Base Index represents content from approximately 20,000 providers in addition to metadata from another 70,000 book publishers. Although constantly growing, today the EDS Base Index provides metadata for nearly 64,000 magazines & journals, approximately 825,000 CDs & DVDs, nearly six million books, more than 320 million newspaper articles, more than 400,000 conference proceedings and hundreds of thousands of additional information sources from various source-types.

Prof. Delle Donne says another important factor in their decision was the functionality of the EDS search experience. “The limiters and facets offered in EDS are a valuable search tool and help group results for an easier search experience.”   The result list limiters and facets offered by EDS help to consolidate user refinement actions and a new checkbox design allows users to easily select multiple source types, clusters and content providers/databases.

Other platform features offered by EDS include “Breadbox” tracking which enables easy removal of all user refinements, including limiters and expanders, an “Available in Library” collection limiter as well as many customization features which Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II also hopes to take advantage of  in the near future.

EBSCO Discovery Service creates a unified, customized index of an institution’s information resources, and an easy, yet powerful means of accessing all of that content from a single search box-searching made even more powerful because of the quality of metadata and depth and breadth of coverage.

The Base Index for EBSCODiscovery Service forms the foundation upon which each EDS subscribing library builds out its custom collection. Beginning with the Base Index, each institution extends the reach of EDS by adding appropriate resources including its catalog, institutional repositories, EBSCOhost and other databases, and additional content sources to which it subscribes. It is this combination that allows a single, comprehensive, custom solution for discovering the value of any library’s collection.
