IPSWICH, Mass. — April 7, 2014 — University of South Carolina (USC) has selected EBSCO Discovery Service™ (EDS) with Encore as its discovery service. The university was looking for a single search box for its users but also wanted the flexibility to have more advanced options and EDS/Encore provided the right fit.
EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO), the provider of EDS, strives to present libraries with an array of options to optimize their individual discovery experience. By offering EDS via Innovative’s Encore, libraries are able to provide expanded services to its users. The EDS/Encore partnership also allows libraries to maximize their investments in multiple resources in a single search experience.
For the University of South Carolina, the integration of services between EDS and Encore, provided their users with more options. According to Paul Cammarata, Assistant Collection Development Librarian at USC, they conducted an extensive trial process of many discovery services and were challenged with finding the right discovery solution to service the varying needs of their users. “Based on feedback from our librarians and library staff, USC found that the EDS/Encore combination was the right fit. The USC system consists of Columbia and seven other campuses throughout the state and our libraries’ needs and demands vary greatly. Flexibility was very important to us and Encore/EDS gave us that, both on the front end as well as the back end with the Admin module.”
Cammarata also credits their decision to the reduced workload and time saver that EDS/Encore provides. “Our workforce and campuses are quite familiar with EBSCO and Innovative. This was a major factor. Workload amounts and time are major issues for us. We didn’t want to have to start all over and EDS/Encore allowed this.”
These partnerships are part of a continuing effort from EBSCO to improve accessibility and usability for customers by expanding the integration of services, while focusing on improving discovery and delivery of content. EBSCO plans to continue to expand its partnerships with additional ILS vendors.
EBSCO Discovery Service creates a unified, customized index of an institution’s information resources, and an easy, yet powerful means of accessing all of that content from a single search box-searching made even more powerful because of the quality of metadata and depth and breadth of coverage.
