Background
Charles Marc Hervé Perceval Leclerc was born in Monte Carlo, Monaco, on October 16, 1997, as the second of three sons to parents Hervé and Pascale Leclerc. Introduced to racing at an early age due to his father’s career as a driver in Formula Three in the 1980s and 1990s, Leclerc began his racing career in karting (in four-wheel vehicles known as go-karts) in 2005. He secured the title of the youngest winner of the Monaco Kart Cup in 2010, followed by the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy and the CIK-FIA World Cup in 2011. Over the following years, Leclerc continued to excel at karting, drawing consistent attention to his promise as a young racing driver.
Life’s Work
In 2014, Leclerc made his auto racing debut in the Formula Renault 2.0 Alps series, finishing second in the championship and demonstrating his ability to adapt to higher levels of competitive racing. The following year, Leclerc competed in the GP3 Series and Formula Three, with the latter being a league widely seen as a development program for future Formula One drivers. His outstanding performance in that year’s GP3 season, including three race wins and eight podiums, earned him the prestigious title. This achievement marked a turning point in his career, attracting the attention of Formula One teams.
In 2016, Leclerc joined Scuderia Ferrari’s Ferrari Driver Academy, a prestigious development program that prepares young drivers for Formula One. He combined his role as a development driver for Scuderia Ferrari, which some consider the most prestigious racing team in Formula One, with his debut season in Formula Two in 2017, where he astounded the racing world once again. Leclerc dominated the championship, securing the title with an impressive seven victories and ten podium finishes. His outstanding performance in Formula Two caught the eye of the racing team Sauber, and they signed Leclerc for the 2018 Formula One season. In his rookie year, he proved his mettle by consistently outperforming his more-experienced teammate, Marcus Ericsson. Leclerc’s exceptional speed, racecraft, and maturity impressed the paddock, earning him praise from both fans and experts alike.
However, Leclerc’s professional success was shadowed by a personal tragedy during this period: Leclerc’s father passed away at the age of fifty-four due to cancer in 2017. This event followed the death of Leclerc’s childhood friend and godfather Jules Bianchi, who died in 2014. Leclerc has said about the death of both men: “You are totally unprepared for something like that. After the death of Jules, this new blow was very hard to digest. That difficult time helped me mature. I became mentally stronger. Losing your father so early changes you forever.”
Leclerc’s long-held dream of driving for Ferrari became a reality after he signed with the team for the 2019 Formula One season. He quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with, securing his maiden victory at the Belgian Grand Prix, becoming the youngest race winner in Ferrari’s history. Throughout the season, he consistently outperformed his four-time World Champion teammate, Sebastian Vettel, finishing ahead of him in the championship standings.
Leclerc’s accomplishments continued in the 2020 and 2021 seasons, where he showcased an ability to extract the maximum performance from a lackluster car. Despite Ferrari’s struggles with an uncompetitive racing program on the whole, Leclerc consistently delivered strong performances throughout 2022, including three wins and eleven podiums, which earned him a commendable second-place finish in the World Drivers’ Championship that year. The year 2023 served as a continuation of some of Ferrari’s lingering problems for Leclerc, who finished the year winless but in fifth place in the drivers’ standings thanks to consistent race finishes in the top ten. A special moment for the Monégasque driver arrived in 2024, when, for the first time in his career, Leclerc won his home race, the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix. That same year also saw Leclerc extend his contract with Scuderia Ferrari, with Leclerc previously stating that he wished to win a world championship with the team.
Impact
Leclerc earned a reputation as a skilled driver at all levels of racing competition. His remarkable performances have captured the attention of fans worldwide, drawing new audiences to the sport, and paved the way for other young drivers by proving that age is not a barrier to achieving success in Formula One.
Leclerc is also a dedicated fundraiser for various charitable causes, including the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, which focuses on teaching children essential water-safety skills. In memory of his late father, who passed away from cancer, Leclerc has donated to and participated in events supporting cancer research and raising awareness about the disease. He has been actively involved in campaigns that promote eco-friendly practices and the protection of natural resources. He has also shown his commitment by driving hybrid and electric vehicles.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Leclerc donated to the Red Cross in Monaco and used his social media platform to fundraise for other COVID-19 relief organizations.
Personal Life
Leclerc is fluent in French, Italian, and English. Off the racing track, Leclerc has been seen driving a number of supercars, including a custom Ferrari 488 Pista Spider. He also races virtually and has a Twitch user account where he has won several Formula One Virtual Grand Prix series against fellow drivers Lando Norris, George Russell, and Alex Albon.
