Freeman first considered acting at a young age. The idea gradually grew on the young man, and he later attended the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. He also performed at London’s National Theatre. After this, Freeman pursued his acting career full time.
Career
Beginning in the late 1990s, Freeman took on several small roles in television shows, including The Bill and This Life in 1997 and Picking Up the Pieces in 1998. His first major role was as a cast member on the short-lived sketch comedy show Bruiser (2000), where Freeman first worked with writer and actor Ricky Gervais. The two would later work together again on the BBC television series The Office, which aired from 2001 to 2003.
Freeman found his breakthrough role in The Office as the mild-mannered sales representative Tim Canterbury, known for his unrequited crush on Dawn, the office receptionist. Tim is a comedic character who plays practical jokes on other characters and engages in witty banter. Freeman played Tim for three seasons, for which he was nominated for a 2004 BAFTA for Best Comedy Performance, a 2002 British Comedy Award for Best Actor, and a 2004 British Comedy Award for Best Television Actor.
The Office opened doors for Freeman, but he has regarded this as bittersweet. On the one hand, he believes that the show helped his career move forward. On the other, Freeman has expressed concern that his reputation as the good-natured Tim has been limiting; he has said in interviews that he became good at playing the overly approachable nice guy, but he does not want to be typecast.
After The Office, Freeman landed the lead in the popular sitcom Hardware, which focuses on the employees of a do-it-yourself supply store. The comedic series ran in 2003 and 2004. During this time, he also appeared in the award-winning romantic comedy Love Actually (2003), in a cast including stars Liam Neeson, Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, and Colin Firth. Following these successes, Freeman decided to take the lead role of Arthur Dent in the well-received film adaptation of Douglas Adams’s popular sci-fi series The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005). Also in 2005, the actor starred in the short-lived television series The Robinsons alongside Hugh Bonneville and Abigail Cruttenden. During the next few years, Freeman took parts in a long string of films, including Hot Fuzz, The Good Night, and The All Together in 2007.
Martin’s next major role came in 2010, when he was cast as Watson in the award-winning television series Sherlock, a modern adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic works. In this version of the stories, Freeman plays Dr. John Watson, an army medic and war veteran who takes a room in Sherlock Holmes’s apartment after finishing his tours of duty. Watson soon begins to observe Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) in his job as a consulting detective to the London metropolitan police force. The two slowly become friends as the series progresses. For his work on Sherlock, Freeman won a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor in 2011 and was nominated for the same award again in 2012; he was also nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries of a Movie in 2012 and 2014. After going on a short hiatus, Sherlock aired a Christmas special in 2016 before its fourth season returned in 2017.
Freeman was soon recruited for director Peter Jackson’s epic, three-film interpretation of J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic 1937 novel The Hobbit. Jackson specifically wanted Freeman in the lead role of Bilbo Baggins, which at first seemed unlikely to happen. Freeman was contractually obligated to shoot a season of Sherlock at the same time as Jackson planned to shoot the first film of his trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012). Rather than choose another actor, Jackson postponed large portions of shooting the movie (mainly filmed in New Zealand) to accommodate Freeman. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey grossed more than $1 billion worldwide and was nominated for three Academy Awards. Freeman reprised his role of the lead hobbit for the next two films—The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hobbit: There and Back Again—which were released in late 2013 and 2014, respectively.
Freeman returned to television in 2014 with a role in the first season of the crime drama Fargo, before appearing as a supporting character in the crime thriller StartUp from 2016 to 2017. For his role in Fargo, Freeman was nominated for both an Emmy and Golden Globe Award. At the same time, he appeared in several films, including the television movie The Eichmann Show (2015), the biographical comedy Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (2016), and the Netflix original thriller Cargo (2017). He also ventured into theater, starring in the 2017 West End production of the political comedy Labour of Love by James Graham.
In 2016, Freeman joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as CIA agent Everett K. Ross in Captain America: Civil War. He reprised the role in the 2018 superhero film Black Panther. The following year, he costarred in the thriller The Operative with Diane Kruger and the comedy Ode to Joy with Morena Baccarin, as well as in the crime miniseries A Confession. Freeman again played Everett K. Ross in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) and subsquently played roles in Queen of Bones (2023) and MIller's Girl (2024). On television, he played a recurring part on the British police drama The Responder (2022-).
