Drop shipping

Dropshipping is a business method in which one company acts as the seller and another company stocks and ships the merchandise. Each company specializes in one part of the transaction, making business more efficient for both. The selling company does not have to keep a large inventory of products, and the shipping company can focus its resources on shipping instead of selling and customer service. While there are disadvantages to running a dropshipping business, it can be a good way for an entrepreneur to start an online business.

Background

The concept of dropshipping began in the 1950s. Newly created catalog companies sent paper catalogs to consumers, which displayed their inventory. Consumers ordered from the catalog, and the catalog company shipped, or fulfilled, the order. Eventually, these companies discovered that they could deal with more products and fill orders more quickly if the manufacturers shipped it directly to the consumer instead of to the company, and dropshipping was born.

The development of affordable computers led to several innovations in dropshipping. One is the Just in Time model, in which companies take orders from consumers and then contact the manufacturer, who makes the item and ships it directly to the consumer. Then, in the 1990s, the Internet was added to the process, and Amazon began taking online orders and having wholesale companies ship the items directly to the consumer. In the twenty-first century, many entrepreneurs use dropshipping to start an online business.

Overview

Unlike other retailers, a dropshipping company does not stock any of its own merchandise. All items are owned by another company, usually a manufacturer or wholesaler. This company then dropships the order, sending the merchandise to the consumer and billing the company that took the order.

People choose the dropshipping model for several reasons. The main reason is that they do not have to purchase or store any inventory, making it a low-cost way to start a business. The model also offers flexibility. The dropshipping company can easily add items by contracting with a company that offers them. A dropshipping model also reduces risk, since no unsold inventory is left to sell at a loss.

However, dropshipping also has several disadvantages. The profit margin is generally low because the other company controls the item's price. Profitability in this case usually depends on negotiating a low purchase price from the company stocking the item. Competition exists in dropshipping, often for the same products, which also drives down the profit margin. The dropshipping company also has to take responsibility with its customers for problems that may not be its fault, such as delayed or damaged shipments or poor-quality merchandise. However, if the prospective business owner carefully selects the products that will be offered and the company that will be responsible for shipping, it can be a low-cost way to start a profitable business.

In the twenty-first century, popular and profitable dropshipping products included home decor, kitchenware, beauty products, tech accessories, clothing, baby items, pet supplies, and outdoor gear. These products were typically small, lightweight, trendy, and in high demand within consumer niches. Key Internet platforms facilitating the dropshipping process included AliExpress, Spocket, SaleHoo, and Zendrop.
