Coalition for Better Television

Founded: 1981

Type of organization: Mississippi-based body dedicated to combatting negative images on television

Significance: An organization formed to voice its objection to vulgarity and violence on television

The CBT was formed in Tupelo, Mississippi, by the Reverend Donald Wildmon. Claiming to represent more than five million families, the organization has vowed to battle the violence, profanity, sex, and obscenity that is available to everyone through commercial television. It began as a branch of the National Federation for Decency, also based in Tupelo, and has since been absorbed into that body.
