Prunes

Prunes are dried plums that are typically consumed as a snack or used to make prune juice. They are made from specific varieties of plums that are ideal for drying. Most of the world’s prunes are produced in California. More often than not, prunes are either eaten whole or mixed with nuts or other similar snack foods, though they can also be used as an ingredient in more complex dishes. Because they are good source of vitamins and have properties that contribute to proper bodily function, prunes are widely considered to be a healthy and nutritious form of fruit.

Overview

Prunes are perhaps the most well-known and widely consumed type of dried fruit. While all prunes are dried plums, not all plums can be used to make prunes. Most prunes are made from plum varieties that grow on certain European plum trees. These particular trees produce freestone plums, which, as opposed to clingstone plums, have a pit that is comparatively easy to remove. The majority prunes today are made from the La Petite d’Agen plum. Originating in France, the La Petite d’Agen plum was brought to California by horticulturist Louis Pellier in 1856. Pellier’s plum tree, which was grafted to an American plum tree, is now responsible for nearly all the prunes produced in the United States. Some prunes are also produced from Japanese plums.

Prunes are a sweet and sticky dried fruit. Usually black or brown in color, prunes are often plumper and moister than other dried fruits. They have a wrinkly appearance and are somewhat chewy when eaten. While many people enjoy eating them whole, some also choose to mix prunes with nuts or dark chocolate chips or to add chopped prunes to cereal or salads. Bakers sometimes use prunes to make pastry fillings. In addition, prune juice is a popular alternative for those who prefer to consume the fruit in beverage form.

Prunes are considered to be one of the healthier snack foods on the market. This is in large part because they contain many beneficial vitamins and nutrients. Prunes are known to be a good source of vitamin A, vitamin B6. vitamin C, vitamin K, iron, manganese, and copper. Prunes also contain a significant amount of potassium and fiber. Given all this, eating prunes or drinking prune juice can have a variety of health benefits. First and foremost, prunes can significantly improve digestion. The soluble and insoluble fiber found in prunes aids in the absorption of nutrients from food and promotes regular bowel movements. The sorbitol and chlorogenic acid in prunes also increases stool frequency. The anti-inflammatory properties of prunes’ natural antioxidants can prevent bone loss and help maintain healthy bone density and formation, as well as lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of atherosclerosis. The potassium in prunes can even lower blood pressure. Eating prunes may also help with weight loss by reducing appetite. Prunes offer some protection against emphysema and may lower the risk of colon cancer. Finally, consuming prunes can help prevent premature aging by reducing cell damage.
