Biography
Paul Berna was born on February 21, 1910, in Hyeres, France. He was educated at Villa Saint-Jean in Fribourg, Switzerland. He was married to Jany Saint-Marcoux, a writer, and they had two sons: Bernard and Philippe. He died in Paris on January 21, 1994.
Before becoming an author of juvenile books, he worked as an accountant, insurance salesman, secretary, and film distributor. He also worked as a reporter for a suburban Paris newspaper from 1930 to 1936, and at the end of World War II he accepted a position with the French Ministry of Communication.
In the 1950’s, however, he began writing books for children, and he continued publishing books for juvenile readers until 1974. He was a prolific writer, and he is best known for his mystery and adventure stories. Although he wrote in French, many of his novels, especially those for older children, have been translated into English. In 1967 he won the Mystery Writers of America award for The Secret of the Missing Boat.
