protocols.io

protocols.io is a centralized platform for the collaborative creation, management and sharing of research protocols and methods. With protocols.io, institutions can gain ‘stewardship’ over methods in support of both further research and teaching, and gain deeper insights into the impact of, and engagement with, research protocols and methods. Users can easily view top performing protocols, experimental runs, views, exports, comments, and more.

Run, Develop, & Publish

Institutions can use protocols.io to run any public or private protocols, storing every run record. While running a protocol, users can modify steps in real time, scale the amounts, and add custom notes and images. The file manager and specialized protocol editor save time on method development. The system’s functionality allows for easy sharing and group collaboration, as well as seamless responding to questions from the community and documentation of deviations, allowing for continuous development and improvement. Once published, Public protocols receive a digital object identifier (DOI) and allow for open communication with authors, facilitating reproducibility and refinement.

Reproducibility and Re-Use

With protocols.io, the research community can readily reproduce and re-use research methods in support of open science goals and mandates. The protocols.io editor feature makes it simple and easy to enter detailed procedures, supporting open communication with authors and facilitating reproducibility and refinement. As a result, protocols.io also speeds the time in which research is produced and disseminated, as researchers can collaborate and iterate on methods in real-time. To ensure that researchers receive credit for their contributions, protocols.io supports the minting of a DOI for each published method, which can be associated with the published paper. As a result, researchers can be cited for more than just their article.

Institutional Stewardship

When institutions provide a centralized platform to their researchers, they gain much-needed insight over the research methods that are created, ran, and copied (forked). Users of protocols.io can also readily collect research methods for inclusion in the (institutional) repository, preserve them, and understand their impact through in-depth analytics. All methods are archived in CLOCKSS for long-term preservation.
