The Story:

Liz Headleand, a London psychiatrist, receives a package from Southeast Asia containing a variety of scraps of writing and notes by her friend Stephen Cox, plus parts of two human finger bones, photographs, and other items. She consults her close friend Alix Bowen and continues to pore over the fragments, for she is half in love with Stephen and is worried. She contacts Hattie Osborne, a friend of Stephen who is living in his London flat while he is away. Hattie begins telling Liz what she knows about Stephen, who had left on a trip to Bangkok, Thailand, to research Pol Pot for a play he had been writing. No one knows how long he has been gone.

Months earlier, Stephen is sitting next to a former Thai beauty queen on his flight to Bangkok. Miss Porntip, now an entrepreneur, takes him under her wing after they arrive. Stephen soon meets Konstantin Vassiliou, a photographer, who introduces him to a network of foreign travelers and aid workers. Meanwhile, in London, Liz goes to a banquet to raise funds for the restoration of Asian temples at the invitation of her former husband. She sits with her friend Esther Breuer, an art historian, who is being wooed by government minister Robert Oxenholme.

In no time, Robert and Esther marry. At their wedding, Liz meets Simon Grunewald, an ethnologist who had met Stephen in Bangkok. He tries to help Liz understand the contents of the package that she received from Asia, and confirms that the package was posted in Cambodia.

Stephen and Konstantin travel to the Thai-Cambodian border to see the refugee camps. At one camp, Stephen meets Mme Savet Akrun, the woman Konstantin immortalized in a photograph of the refugees—the same photograph Liz had found in the package mailed from Southeast Asia. Stephen and Konstantin next fly to Hanoi to get passes to Ho Chi Minh Ville (formerly Saigon) and Cambodia. In Saigon they arrange a trip to include a Japanese photographer named Akira, with whom they eventually enter Cambodia and reach Phnom Penh. After Stephen has one unsuccessful outing into the countryside on Akira’s motorcycle, the three of them drive into the countryside and are captured. Akira is separated from Stephen and Konstantin. Stephen gets a serious fever, and Konstantin leaves him to seek help. Stephen is brought back to partial health by a peasant nurse and is moved to a Khmer Rouge clinic. He falls ill again and dies.

Two years later, in London, Liz gathers together Stephen’s friends and acquaintances. Still unable to find him, they all agree that someone should go to Asia to find him; Liz is chosen. She flies to Bangkok, and seeks Stephen’s trail. The trail leads her to a refugee camp at the Cambodian border, where she meets Mme Akrun. She then travels to Hanoi and then Saigon, where her search ends: Gabriel Denham, an old friend of Liz, is making a film about Stephen and confirms to Liz that Stephen is dead—and he has proof. Liz then falls ill with toxic shock and is rescued and taken to Bangkok by Miss Porntip. Another of her former husbands, Charles Headleand, flies to Bangkok and brings her back to England. In London, Liz organizes a memorial service for Stephen.
