Cup Match Day (Bermuda)

Cup Match Day (Bermuda)

This is a movable event.

Every year on the Thursday before the first Monday in August, the people of Bermuda celebrate a public holiday known as Cup Match Day. In 2001, the year used to determine the dates of movable events in this book, Cup Match Day fell on August 2.

Bermuda is a small principality consisting of a group of islands off the coast of North Carolina in the Atlantic Ocean. Although self-governing, it is still a dependency of Great Britain, which came to possess the islands during colonial times. Bermuda has a population of roughly 65,000 people, approximately 1,000 of whom live in the capital and largest city of Hamilton. Because of Bermuda's salubrious climate, it is a popular tourist destination. On Cup Match Day the inhabitants and visitors to the islands can enjoy a traditional game of cricket. This sport, which is of British origin, is often compared to American baseball and involves intricate rules which can ensure that a single match takes several days to complete. The two leading teams in Bermuda, the St. George's Cricket Club and the Somerset Cricket Club, play against each other in front of 15,000 spectators or more. Popular native foods such as curries, mussels, and conch stew are available. Cup Match Day is Bermuda's premier sporting event, somewhat akin to the World Series or the Super Bowl for American sports fans.
