First Beauty Contest Is Held

The first modern beauty contest took place at the town of Spa in Belgium on September 19, 1888. Owing to contemporary social mores, the contestants could not wear the revealing bathing suits and other fashion items common to beauty contests today, but it was a competitive event which foreshadowed such familiar beauty pageants as the Miss America contest and similar national and international contests that attract millions of viewers around the world. Over the decades, in an effort to lessen the sexism perceived to exist in traditional beauty pageants where the emphasis was very strong on physical attractiveness, many contests have come to incorporate other criteria for choosing the winner. For example, contestants may be required to participate in a talent show, or express their thoughts concerning a certain personal or political issue. The winner of the first beauty contest in Spa was 18-year-old Bertha Soucaret from Guadeloupe.
