Poker (card game)
Poker is a popular card game that combines elements of skill, strategy, and chance, often involving gambling and betting. Played with a standard deck of fifty-two cards, it can take place in various settings, including casinos, private homes, and online platforms. The objective is to win a pot, which consists of the total bets made during a hand. Players compete by forming hands ranked from high card to royal flush, with each type of hand having its specific criteria for strength.
Among the different variations of poker, Texas Hold'em is the most widely played. In this version, players receive two private cards (hole cards) and share five community cards dealt faceup on the table. The game progresses through multiple betting rounds, where players can choose to bet, check, call, raise, or fold based on their hand's potential. Bluffing is also a strategic element, allowing players to mislead opponents about the strength of their hands. The game concludes with a showdown, where remaining players reveal their hands to determine the winner. Poker's blend of social interaction and competition makes it a captivating pastime for many around the world.

Poker Basics
In a poker game, players sit at a table with chips, which are small, round tokens that represent money. A table can include as few as two or as many as ten players. Most commonly, however, a table consists of nine or ten players. During a poker hand, players bet chips. The chips go into the pot, which is the sum of the bets made throughout the hand. The object of poker is to win the pot of money. The winner is the player who has the best hand, which is determined by a ranking of hands. This ranking, from weakest to strongest, is as follows: high card, one pair, two pair, three of a kind, straight, flush, full house, four of a kind, straight flush, and royal flush.
High card is a hand in which the highest ranking card wins because the hand does not contain at least one pair (two cards of the same rank). Two pair is a hand that has two different pairs. Three of a kind (also called a set or trips) is a hand that includes three cards of the same rank.
A straight consists of five cards of different suits in consecutive order. Jack of spades, ten of hearts, nine of spades, eight of diamonds, and seven of clubs is a straight. In a straight, an ace can be used as the lowest ranking card in the deck (lower than a two) or the highest ranking card in the deck (higher than a king). For instance, five of clubs, four of diamonds, three of spades, two of spades, and ace of hearts is a straight, as is ace of diamonds, king of hearts, queen of clubs, jack of hearts, and ten of spades.
A flush is five cards of the same suit. A full house is a combination of three of a kind and one pair. For instance, jack of diamonds, jack of clubs, jack of spades, six of clubs, and six of spades is a full house. Four of a kind consists of a hand that has four cards of the same rank.
A straight flush is a combination of a straight and a flush. In other words, a straight flush is five cards of the same suit in consecutive order. Jack of clubs, ten of clubs, nine of clubs, eight of clubs, and seven of clubs is a straight flush. A royal flush is the highest possible straight flush. An example of a royal flush is ace of spades, king of spades, queen of spades, jack of spades, and ten of spades.
Texas Hold’em
Many types of poker games exist, including Texas Hold’em, Omaha, seven-card stud, and five-card draw. Texas Hold’em is the most widely played poker game. A hand of Texas Hold’em includes forced bets called blinds that must be posted before the cards are dealt. There is a small blind and a big blind. The small blind typically is half the big blind. A hand also may include an ante, which is a forced bet that all players are required to post. The ante usually is smaller than the small blind. The purpose of blinds and antes is to build the pot.
Each player is dealt two cards facedown that are called hole cards. Because these cards are facedown, the other players cannot see them. There also are five community cards (cards that are shared by all players) that are dealt faceup on the table. These community cards, which are collectively referred to as the board, are dealt in three stages: a group of three community cards, called the flop; a fourth community card, referred to as the turn or fourth street; and a fifth community card called the river or fifth street. Each player must use five cards to make his or her hand. Players may use their hole cards along with cards from the board to make the best possible five-card hand based on the ranking of hands. They may use both of their hole cards, one of their hole cards, or neither of their hole cards, whichever option gives them the best possible hand.
Throughout a hand of Texas Hold’em, several rounds of betting occur. The first round takes place after the players are dealt their hole cards. Subsequent rounds occur after the flop, after the turn, and after the river. Players have several options during each round of betting. Depending on the situation, players may bet (place chips into the pot); check (forgo betting); call (match the previous bet); raise (bet a larger amount than an existing bet); re-raise (raise after a player has already raised); or fold (relinquish his or her hand). Players typically decide what action to take based on the strength of their hand. However, a player may decide to bluff, or bet with a weak hand to deceive the other players.
Following the final round of betting, the players who are still in the hand turn over their hole cards to determine the winner of the hand. This is referred to as the showdown. The player with the best hand wins the pot. If two or more players have the same hand, they split the winnings.
