The cost of living is on the rise. How can libraries help?

In the United States...

  • Rental costs have risen 18% since 2021
  • Gas prices are up 50% since 2022
  • Used car prices are up 21% since 2022

Meanwhile the U.S. minimum wage has not increased since 2009.

What can libraries do?

Start a Repair Cafe - Repair cafes are a skill-sharing and community-building opportunity where patrons can bring their clothes, furniture, appliances, bicycles and toys to be repaired or mended for free by community volunteers.

Offer Local Discounts - Libraries can partner with local businesses to offer discounts to library cardholders, helping patrons save money on goods and services.

Expand the "Library of Things" - In addition to free books, media and digital research tools, libraries can offer a range of non-traditional items and equipment that patrons can borrow, including tools, recreational equipment, electronics, games and more.

Subscribe to ConsumerReports.org - Consumer Reports is the world's largest nonprofit product-testing organization and has been helping consumers find better, safter products for over 80 years.
