They are often centered on a single church, mosque, temple, or other place of worship. Directors organize group functions such as community meals and fundraisers. They also coordinate enrollment, staffing, and curricula for faith-based education initiatives. While some religious activities and education directors are spiritual leaders or clergy members, it is not a requirement of the job. However, most directors share the faith or religious doctrine of the community they serve.

Work Environment. The work environment of a religious activities and education director varies. Directors can work at churches, temples, mosques, or other places of worship. Many work out of an office in or near a religious facility. Directors hold events in various locations, including cafeterias, meeting halls, libraries, and conference centers. A director’s day often begins with a staff meeting to ensure that all projects and operations run smoothly. These projects include religious education classes, volunteer programs, and outreach missions. Some directors conduct various administrative duties related to their congregation, including updating community websites, sending emails, and making schedules for teachers, students, and clergy. Other directors manage charity initiatives such as fundraisers, meal programs for people experiencing homelessness, and health clinics. Some directors are responsible for oversight of family or marriage counseling services and substance abuse programs. Activities and education directors also manage group programs such as summer camps and spiritual retreats for members of their community. They also recruit volunteers and conduct project-specific training seminars.

They work in groups of varying sizes and work one-on-one with clergy members, teachers, students, and volunteers. Directors work regularly with fellow worshippers and the business community.

Technological Environment. Contemporary office and communications technology is part of the job of a religious activities and education director. Basic computer skills are required, and knowledge of social media is important.

Education, Training, and Advancement

High School/Secondary. Many religious denominations do not require formal education of their religious activities and education directors. In this case, personal charisma, religious commitment, basic literacy, and dedication to the work are the only requirements. Formal or religious education is preferred or required in other religious settings.

High school students interested in a career as a religious activities and education director should take classes in the humanities, especially English, philosophy, and history. Courses in political science and psychology are also beneficial. Foreign languages and instrumental and vocal music classes can be helpful, as music is often a part of spiritual activities.

In addition to secular studies, a person should study the religion of their choice or calling. This is done through attending religious teachings offered at churches, synagogues, mosques, madrassas, temples, shrines, or other religious facilities.

Postsecondary. Some churches and religious denominations require activities and education directors to have some form of postsecondary education. Individuals interested in the profession can consider advanced degree programs in education, religious studies, or social work. In the US, a degree in religious studies provides a solid basis for work for many Christian denominations. Similarly, a degree in Jewish or Islamic studies can prepare individuals for employment in these religions. A bachelor’s degree in sociology provides a secular foundation on which those interested in religious work can build. A master’s degree in any of the above subjects can prepare a person for an advanced career as a religious activities and education director. Other postsecondary education options include doctoral programs in education, religious studies, sociology, or social work.
