According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nurses and midwives make up nearly 50 percent of the global healthcare workforce. And their role is critical in initiatives to reach universal health coverage by 2030. Nurses and midwives are responsible for the lion’s share of patient care, but their impact can also be seen and felt deeply in the areas of population health, disease prevention and patient/community health education, to name just a few.
Nurses and midwives are often the unsung heroes of healthcare, but this year the WHO and partnering organizations are mobilizing to shine a spotlight on the nursing and midwife professions in a big way. With 2020 named the Year of the Nurse and Midwife; the goal is to celebrate nurses’ and midwives’ work, showcase the challenges they face and advocate for support and investment in these essential professions. Given that 2020 is the 200th anniversary of the birth of modern nursing’s founder, Florence Nightingale, this is a particularly special year for the nursing community.
