Buddhism: Research Starters Topic

A characteristic of Buddhism from its earliest inception in the sixth century BCE has been its ability to take different forms in different cultures. While all the Buddhist practices in Asia have been based on the teachings of the Buddha, notably achieving inner peace through meditation and ceasing to struggle against the inevitable pain of life, the practices have differed in various regions and cultures of Asia. Immigrants from different regions of Asia brought their own forms of Buddhist practice to the United States, which, by the 1970s, had proven to be a fertile ground for serious study and conversion among Westerners.
